about

I wrote this song for a favorite female visual artist of mine as part of a project I did in 2019 at the Philadelphia Art Museum to write music for paintings by women in their collection. It was a song for Corita Kent, whose body of work is vast and amazing and inspiring. She did a lot of type based screen printing during the Civil Rights era, another time in American history with lots of shifts and growing pains. Definitely check her out! It's about finding yourself in an uncertain unstable world and what are you left with that's true? Love. Music. Art. Conversations with your spirit and with others. Being more at peace with the unknown.

The tune was originally released via Folkadelphia on a compilation series that helped musicians during Covid-19 pandemic. Feel free to check that out here, and get the whole compilation :) folkadelphia.bandcamp.com/track/center

The cover image is myself sitting in front of a projection of a piece of Corita's entitled "yes people like us" 1965, serigraph.

I was recently invited to perform the song for what would be Corita's 103rd birthday by the Corita Center in LA. The video is from that performance. Be sure to check out her work and the Corita Center as well!

lyrics

Chorus-
The Center is not fixed
And the center will not hold
And the truth is a moving target
Follow it into the fold

Verse 1-
Oh sister walk me through the junkyard
Stroll under letters like temples
Xray thoughts as samples
Screened for the masses

Repeat Chorus

Verse 2-
Oh sister walk me through the junkyard
Free flowing thoughts amidst lovers
Fragments of landscapes
All for the sake of seeing
